Nghtcrwlrs

“...NGHTCRWLRS debut was nothing I ever expected. Yet, everything this listener could ever hope for. Get weird. Stay weird.” – James Damion, United by Rocket Science
NGHTCRWLRS is a band made up of individuals who have logged time in New Jersey’s punk/indie rock scene for the past ten years. In fact, they all continue to play in different projects on top of their duties in NGHTCRWLRS. The band honors NJ’s indie rock/emo legacy while combining it with its own brand of noise and psychedelic influences, sounding like the middle ground between Brand New and ‘80s Sonic Youth or if Pavement was really in to early Pink Floyd, instead of The Fall. NGHTCRWLRS’ self-titled debut album was recorded right in their Clifton, NJ practice space and captures the loose but taught arrangements and raw power of the band’s live show.
The music is stunningly psychedelic while still capturing the emotional wreckage of being a twenty-something person unsure of the world and your place in it. Drummer Max Rauch and bassist Brian Goglia’s laid back melodicism suggest Crooked Rain era Pavement but with more groove while guitarists Frank DeFranco and Eric Goldberg twist and bend their guitars around each other like no-wave forefathers Lee Renaldo and Thurston Moore. The songs bleed passion. When Goldberg sings “I got your note, forgot to call, I don’t feel anything at all” on album closer and fan favorite “Reclusive Me”, it hits you right in the gut. NGHTCRWLRS’ self-titled debut captures fire, a young band with a new take on a beloved sound. Take a listen and see why guitar-based indie rock can still elicit a passion like no other type of music.
