Dorsal Fins are providing a diverse and rare cross section representation of Melbourne’s contemporary music scene, at the other end of the spectrum this band could be the best thing to come out of Australia in a long time.
Sunday morning. 10am. It's a time that musicians usually associate with sleeping or a hangover but it is also a time that is usually free of other musical commitments and that is why rehearsal has been called for this unfamiliar hour. Bleary eyed musicians arrive, easing the pain with jokes, 4 hours later it is over. On Tuesday their debut 12" Gripless is complete. A few months later a second rehearsal is called, again at 10am on a Sunday. On Tuesday tracking begins for a debut album, 35 hours later it is finished and the band can go home…or out to party.
Such is the tale of the inception of Dorsal Fins, the latest brainchild of Melbourne's busiest musician/composer Liam McGorry (Saskwatch, Eagle and the Worm). Dorsal Fins was originally envisaged as a 'recording-only' project with the intent of exploring an array sounds spanning from 80's dance music to 90's grunge, punk to synth pop but as Liam puts it, the real purpose of assembling the band was to hang out with 9 of his best friends in the same place at the same time.
